How to Learn English When You Kind of Hate English

For everyone stuck learning a language they never actually wanted to learn.

Some learners love English. They find the sound of it interesting, they enjoy the culture attached to it, and studying feels closer to a hobby than a chore.

And then there is everyone else.

I have worked with plenty of students who, if given the choice, would happily never think about English again. They do not like the sound of it. They find it grammatically annoying. They are not learning it out of curiosity or love. They are learning it because a job demands it, or a visa requires it, or a partner speaks it, or the country they now live in simply runs on it. Motivation, in the warm, enthusiastic sense, is nowhere to be found.

If that is you, first of all, welcome. You are in good company, and this post is for you specifically.

You do not need to love English

Here is the good news. Loving the language was never actually a requirement.

A huge amount of language learning advice assumes enthusiasm. Find your passion for the culture. Fall in love with the sound of the words. Immerse yourself joyfully. All lovely if it happens naturally, completely unnecessary if it does not.

You do not need to love English. You need to spend time inside it, regularly, in a way that does not feel like punishment. That is a much lower bar, and it is entirely achievable even if the language itself leaves you cold.

The trick is forgetting about English entirely

Here is the actual strategy, and it is simpler than it sounds. Stop trying to consume English. Start consuming things you like, and let them happen to be in English.

If you love true crime, find true crime podcasts in English. If you are obsessed with football, watch football commentary and interviews in English. If cooking is your thing, follow English speaking chefs and recipe channels. If you cannot get enough of a particular hobby, forum, or niche interest, there is very likely an English speaking corner of the internet dedicated entirely to it, often a bigger and more active one than whatever exists in your first language.

The language stops being the point. The content becomes the point, and the English rides along quietly in the background, doing its work without you needing to feel anything about it at all.

This matters more than it might seem, because the input method depends on volume, and volume depends on you actually showing up day after day. Nobody sustains hours of content they find tedious just because it is theoretically good for them. But almost everyone will happily spend hours on something they genuinely enjoy, and if that something happens to be in English, the language gets absorbed as a side effect of you having a good time.

Let the content do the heavy lifting

Once you find that content, your job gets remarkably simple. You are not trying to study. You are not analysing grammar or building vocabulary lists. You are just watching, listening, or reading, the same way you would in your first language, letting curiosity pull you forward one episode or one article at a time.

The point is not the specific tool. The point is finding the thing that makes you forget, even briefly, that you are supposed to be learning something.

What to do about speaking

Speaking is a slightly different challenge, because it usually cannot happen passively the way reading and listening can. You do generally have to show up and talk to someone.

If you genuinely dislike English, this can feel like the hardest part, and I will not pretend otherwise. But it helps enormously to find a conversation partner who makes the experience feel more like a chat about something you actually care about than a formal lesson. If you found your football commentary or true crime podcast, talk about that in your sessions instead of working through generic textbook topics you have no interest in. Progress without the passion

Here is what I want you to take from this. You do not need to fall in love with English to become genuinely fluent in it. You need consistent contact with content that does not feel like a chore, and a bit of patience while the results build up quietly in the background.

Plenty of fluent English speakers never particularly loved the language either. They just spent enough time inside it, attached to things they actually cared about, and the fluency arrived anyway. It does not need your affection. It just needs your time.
