If you have read this blog for a while, you know I am a huge proponent of reading and listening. That does not change. Input is still the foundation everything else stands on, and nothing in this post argues otherwise.
But the specific skill of producing English, quickly, under the mild pressure of a real exchange, only gets built one way. By actually speaking, repeatedly, in whatever form you can manage.
Here are the ways to actually do that, starting with the ones that need nothing but you.
Talk to yourself
This is the lowest pressure speaking practice available, and one of the most underused. Narrate your morning. Describe what you are cooking. Argue a point out loud as if someone were disagreeing with you.
Nobody is listening, nobody is judging, and your brain still gets the full benefit of producing real sentences under real, if gentle, time pressure. Ten minutes a day of this builds genuine retrieval speed that reading alone never touches.
Describe what is actually in front of you
A simple variation on talking to yourself, but worth calling out on its own. Look around the room, or out the window, and describe what you see, out loud, in as much detail as you can manage.
This forces spontaneous production rather than rehearsed sentences, since you cannot prepare in advance what you are about to see. It is a genuinely good way to surface gaps in your vocabulary, the specific nouns and descriptions you reach for and cannot quite find, which then become exactly the right things to look up afterward.
Read aloud
Reading text you already understand and producing it with your mouth trains a different part of speaking than talking to yourself does. The words and structure are already there on the page, so there is no retrieval challenge, but your mouth still has to do the physical work of forming the sounds and the natural rhythm of connected speech.
A few paragraphs from something you have already read on LingQ, read aloud rather than silently, is a simple addition that pays off more than it seems like it should.
Shadowing
Speaking along slightly behind a podcast host or narrator, matching their rhythm and pace as closely as you can, trains the physical side of speech production without the added difficulty of generating your own sentences. You are borrowing someone else’s fluent English and running it through your own mouth, which builds the muscle memory for natural rhythm and intonation faster than almost anything else.
Structured sentence practice
Talking to yourself and shadowing both work well, but they rely entirely on your own discipline to actually happen every day. A tool built specifically around this gap closes that reliability problem.
Flexling is genuinely the best option I have found for this. It gives you real sentences to hear and produce yourself, with spaced repetition bringing back exactly the ones you have not fully nailed yet, and a shadowing mode that works well even while you are walking or doing something else with your hands. You can also build sentences around your own life, your job, your family, the things you actually need to say, rather than relying only on generic material. If you want one single tool to make daily speaking practice actually happen consistently, this is where I would start.
A safe, patient conversation partner
At some point, speaking practice has to include another real person, because that is the only place the pressure and unpredictability of genuine conversation actually exist. But the person matters enormously.
Look for someone patient, who does not jump in to finish your sentences, who responds to what you mean rather than correcting every small error, and who makes mistakes feel like a normal part of the conversation rather than something to be embarrassed about. That kind of environment is what actually lets your English come out, imperfect and real, rather than staying locked up behind the fear of getting something wrong.
This is exactly the environment I try to create in my own sessions. You can find a teacher on iTalki who works this way, or book a session directly with me if you want to try it yourself.
Record yourself and listen back
This one feels uncomfortable the first time, and it is genuinely useful. Record yourself speaking for a minute or two on any topic, then listen back. You will notice things you cannot catch in the moment of speaking, hesitations, a word you reached for and did not find, a sentence that trailed off before it finished.
None of this is meant to be discouraging. It is information, the same way a mirror is information for anyone practising a physical skill, and noticing a pattern is usually the first step toward fixing it.
Debate something you actually care about
Pick a topic you have a genuine opinion on and argue your case out loud, either to yourself or to a conversation partner willing to push back. Debate forces longer, more connected speech than simple question and answer exchanges do, and caring about the topic pulls real vocabulary and real urgency into your English in a way a neutral practice topic never quite manages.
Try This
Pick one of these that you are not currently doing at all, and add it to tomorrow specifically. Not all seven. Just one, attached to a moment in your day that already exists.
Speaking fluency is built the same way everything else on this blog is, through consistent, repeated practice rather than one dramatic effort.
If you have a question about your English, something you have been stuck on or curious about, let me know in the comments. I read every one, and I might turn your question into a future post.
If this post helped, a like lets me know and a restack helps it reach another learner who might need it.
