Students ask me this fairly often, in one form or another. If you could only give me one piece of advice, one thing to focus on above everything else, what would it be?
I always give the same answer. Listen more.
Not a little more. Significantly more than you currently think is reasonable. Most learners drastically underestimate how much listening it actually takes to approach a natural, native sounding level of English, and that gap between what people are doing and what actually moves the needle is, in my experience, the single biggest reason progress stalls.
Why I keep coming back to this
Reading matters enormously. It builds vocabulary faster than almost anything else, and it gives you time to notice a sentence properly, in a way spoken language rushing past you simply does not allow.
Speaking matters enormously too. You cannot become a confident, fluent speaker without practising speaking, full stop. No amount of passive input alone will build the specific skill of producing language under the pressure of a live conversation.
But if you forced me to choose just one, the answer would still be listening, and it would not be close.
There is a practical reason for this too, beyond everything listening builds linguistically. Listening is the one part of this whole method that does not require you to stop doing anything else.
Reading needs your eyes and your full attention, which means it competes directly with everything else in your day for the same limited resource. Speaking needs another person available at the same time as you. Listening needs neither. You can do it while you drive. While you clean the house. While you go to the gym. While you cook dinner or fold laundry or walk the dog. It slots into time that would otherwise be empty, without asking you to give up anything else to make room for it.
That is a huge part of why it deserves to be the priority. Not just because of what it builds in your English, but because it is the one habit that genuinely does not compete with the rest of your life for space.
What listening actually builds
Listening is where the rhythm of English lives. The stress patterns, the way certain syllables get swallowed in casual speech, the natural pace at which sentences move. None of that comes through clearly on a page. You can read a sentence a hundred times and still be caught off guard the first time you hear it spoken quickly, with all the connections and contractions a real speaker uses without thinking.
This is also where comprehension under real conditions gets built. A conversation does not pause for you. Nobody hands you a transcript in a meeting or on a phone call. The only way to get comfortable with English at full, natural speed is to spend enormous amounts of time listening to it at full, natural speed, until what once sounded like a blur starts to resolve into individual words and phrases.
And listening feeds speaking more directly than most learners realise. The phrases and rhythms your mouth eventually produces come from somewhere, and that somewhere is almost always your ear. A learner who has listened extensively tends to speak with a natural flow that a learner who has only read and studied grammar struggles to match, even with a larger vocabulary.
The volume most people are missing
Here is where I think the real gap sits. Most learners listen to English occasionally. A podcast episode here, a video there, maybe an hour or two spread across a week if they are being diligent.
That is nowhere near enough. Reaching a natural, fluent level requires listening in the thousands of hours, not the dozens. It sounds like an intimidating number until you realise it does not need to happen through dedicated study sessions. It happens through folding listening into time that already exists. Commutes. Chores. Exercise. Background listening while you cook. Hours that would otherwise pass in silence or in your first language, redirected toward English instead.
This is less about discipline and more about redesigning your default. If English is not the thing playing in your ears during all those spare pockets of time, you are leaving an enormous amount of potential progress on the table.
Where to actually put that time
Podcasts and shows on a topic you enjoy are the foundation. The specific content matters less than whether it pulls you back day after day, because that pull is what generates the volume this method depends on.
Lingopie is particularly useful here if you want your listening tied to something visual, since watching real shows with subtitles helps connect what you hear to what is actually being said, closing gaps your ear might otherwise miss entirely.
Flexling works well as a structured complement, giving you natural English sentences to hear and repeat. This helps strengthen your listening comprehension while also giving you repeated practice producing the kinds of sentence patterns you want to use yourself.
And once your ear has built up real familiarity through all that listening, testing it in a live conversation is where everything gets put to use. You can book a session with me on iTalki if you want to find out how much your listening has actually built, in a setting where nothing is scripted and nothing waits for you to catch up.
Say it again, differently
I know this is not a new message on this blog. I have made some version of this point before, and I will probably make it again, because it is the one piece of advice that keeps proving itself true across every student I have worked with. The learners whose English sounds the most natural are, almost without exception, the ones who have listened the most.
If you take nothing else from this post, take this. Whatever amount of English you are currently listening to in a week, it is very likely not enough. Not because you are doing anything wrong, but because most of us dramatically underestimate the volume this actually requires.
Increase it. That single change, more than any other, is where I would put my attention if I only had one thing to give you.
Try This
Look at your week honestly and find the pockets of time currently spent in silence or in your first language. A commute, a walk, time spent cooking or cleaning. Pick one of those pockets and fill it with English listening starting tomorrow, and keep it there.
That single addition, repeated consistently, adds up to more progress than almost anything else you could do this month.
How much English do you think you actually listen to in an average week? I would be curious to know.
If this post helped, a like lets me know and a restack helps it reach another learner who might need it.
