Every so often someone pushes back on the whole idea behind this blog.
“I get that reading and listening sound nice, but how does that actually turn into knowing a language? You need to sit down and study the rules. You need to memorise vocabulary. Otherwise how does it get into your head?”
It is a completely fair question. And honestly, it is the same question that used to sit at the back of my own mind before I saw the evidence for myself, both in my students and in the research behind the method.
So let’s actually look at it.
The experiment that started it all
Back in the 1960s, a group of English-speaking parents in Quebec, Canada, tried something unusual. They wanted their children to grow up genuinely bilingual in French, so they enrolled them in schools where every subject, maths, science, art, everything, was taught entirely in French. No English instruction. No grammar drills in French. Just full immersion in a language the children did not yet speak.
The results surprised a lot of people. These children grew up with near native comprehension of French, all while their English stayed completely on track. They had not studied French the way a traditional classroom studies a language. They had simply spent years understanding it.
This was one of the pieces of evidence that led an American linguist named Stephen Krashen to propose something that felt almost too simple at the time. We acquire language, he argued, by understanding messages. Not by memorising rules and then practising them until they become automatic, but by comprehending things said or written in the language, over and over, in large enough quantities that the language itself gets absorbed as a side effect of understanding.
He called it the input hypothesis, and decades later, it remains one of the most influential ideas in how we understand language acquisition.
Why this feels counterintuitive
Most of us were taught languages the other way around. Learn the rule. Practise the rule. Apply the rule. It feels logical because it mirrors how we learn a lot of other things, like maths or a musical instrument.
But language is not quite like those things, and here is the part that tends to surprise people. Every fluent speaker of every language on earth, including you in your first language, acquired it through input, not instruction. Nobody taught you the rule for word order before you started forming sentences as a toddler. You heard thousands of hours of language around you, and your brain, without any conscious effort on your part, extracted the patterns and built a working system.
That system is remarkably sophisticated. It handles grammar, vocabulary, idiom, tone, rhythm, all of it, without you ever sitting an exam on any of it. And the mechanism that built it was comprehension. Simply understanding what was being said, again and again, until the patterns became instinct.
The doubt people feel about this usually comes down to one thing. It does not feel like learning. There is no test, no visible checklist, no clear moment where you can point and say “that is when I learned it.” The process is quiet and gradual, which makes it easy to underestimate.
What the brain is actually doing
Here is a simple way to think about it, without getting too deep into neuroscience.
Every time you understand a sentence in English, whether you read it or heard it, your brain registers the patterns inside that sentence. Not consciously. You are focused on the meaning, on what is actually being said. But underneath that focus, your brain is quietly building a statistical model of the language. Which words tend to appear together. Which structures show up in which contexts. What sounds right and what does not.
Do that enough times, across enough different sentences, and the model becomes detailed enough to function on its own. You do not need to consciously recall a grammar rule anymore, because the pattern has become part of how your brain predicts and produces language. This is very similar to how children build their first language, and it is also how adult learners, given enough input, build a second one.
Grammar study can support this process. Understanding a rule can sharpen what you notice when you encounter it in real content, which can slightly speed up how quickly a pattern gets absorbed. But the rule itself, sitting in your conscious memory, is not the same thing as the pattern being built into your instinct. That second part only comes from input.
Why it takes time to trust
The reason this method can feel uncertain, especially early on, is that the results are not always visible in the moment. You read something, you understand it, you move on with your day. Nothing seems to have happened. And yet, somewhere underneath, something has.
This is different from a grammar exercise, where you get an immediate result. Right or wrong, on the page, in front of you. Input does not offer that same instant feedback, which makes it feel less concrete, even when it is doing more of the real work.
The evidence tends to show up later, and often in a way you were not expecting. A phrase arrives in a conversation that you do not remember learning. A sentence structure that used to trip you up suddenly feels natural. You realise you followed an entire podcast without translating anything in your head. None of that happens on schedule. It happens because the input accumulated to a point where the pattern became available.
Trusting the process
None of this means grammar has no place. It has a small, useful, supporting role. But the actual acquisition, the part that turns knowledge into instinct, happens through understanding real language in real context, consistently, over time.
If you have been doubting whether reading and listening alone could really be enough, you are in good company. It goes against how most of us were taught to think about learning. But the research backs it up, the immersion programs back it up, and every fluent speaker of every language on earth is living proof of it, whether they realise it or not.
Give the input time. Trust that comprehension is doing more than it feels like it is doing. The results tend to arrive quietly, and then all at once.

Pick one piece of content this week, an article, a podcast episode, a show, and pay attention only to whether you understood it. Not what grammar it used. Not what vocabulary it contained. Just whether the meaning came through.
If it did, your brain did the rest without you needing to ask it to. That is the whole method, working exactly as it is supposed to.
